Nestled in the Finger Lakes region, this gem of a park is renowned for its dramatic gorges, cascading waterfalls, and scenic trails. Here's a detailed account of our journey, the wonders we encountered, and the charming covered wagon Airbnb we called home for a night.
Day 5
We set off from Niagara Falls in the early morning, savoring Tim Horton’s coffee as we took one last pass by the roaring falls. Crossing the Rainbow Bridge into Niagara Falls, NY, we were treated to a final breathtaking view of the cascades fading behind us. With our hearts full of anticipation for the road ahead, we embarked on the drive to Watkins Glen. The route unfolded like a moving canvas, first with the gentle sprawl of farmlands and rolling hills, then transitioning into the lush, vineyard-laced landscapes of the Finger Lakes. The route had taken us into the rural countryside and as we neared Seneca Lake, the road hugged the water’s edge, revealing serene views of sparkling waters and distant forested ridges. Finally, our journey brought us to Watkins Glen, where the towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls of the state park welcomed us into the embrace of nature’s quiet beauty.
Watkins Glen State Park
As we arrived at Watkins Glen State Park, the sheer grandeur of the landscape immediately captivated us. The park's entrance, marked by an elegant stone archway, beckoned us into a world of natural splendor. Known for its series of waterfalls and picturesque gorges, the park boasts 19 waterfalls within a two-mile span, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Gorge Trail: A Hiker’s Paradise
We started our exploration on the iconic Gorge Trail, a must-visit for anyone coming to Watkins Glen. The trail, carved directly into the rock, starts at the Sentry Bridge and meanders alongside the gorge, offering close-up views of the park's most stunning features. As we walked, we marveled at the intricate rock formations, moss-covered cliffs, and the soothing sound of water cascading around us.

One of the highlights was Rainbow Falls, where water gracefully spills over a ledge, creating a shimmering curtain of mist. The trail takes you directly behind the falls, providing a unique perspective and an opportunity to feel the cool spray on your face.
A Night in a Covered Wagon
After a day filled with hiking and exploration, we were ready for a unique and cozy retreat. We had booked a stay in a covered wagon Airbnb, located just a short drive from the park. This was one of the coolest places we’ve stayed and the accommodation provided a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, making it a memorable part of our trip.
Spending the night there was truly a magical experience. We could hear the rain hit the canvas roof that night and as the sun came up shadows of the leaves danced all around through the canvas. It sparked so much imagination in us we swore to come back some day.
